Happy New Year! Here in Colorado, we got almost 2 feet of snow in the past few weeks! I’m not sure about you, but we just love the snow! In honor of all that fluffy white stuff, we picked Winter Wonderland for this month’s candle. .Let your imagination take over while you indulge in this Winter wonder that includes warm notes of cinnamon, clove, vanilla musk and mulberry. Hints of cassia root, eucalyptus, amber, fir balsam, pine, and cedar are included in this refreshing blend that will brighten your spirits.
December is a month full of holidays, parties and family get-togethers. Wherever you are, light a candle and think about the ones you love. Here are some meanings behind candles during this holiday season:
Hanukkah:The reason for the Chanukkah lights is not for the “lighting of the house within”, but rather for the “illumination of the house without,” so that passersby should see it and be reminded of the holiday’s miracle. Accordingly, lamps are set up at a prominent window or near the door leading to the street (Wikipedia.com)
Christmas: During Christmas, every faithful Irish Catholic family hoped to have a priest visit their home so that they could receive the sacraments and in return offer him hospitality. So they would leave their doors unlocked and place candles in the windows to signal a priest that he was welcome and would be safe. Sometimes, a single candle would appear in several windows, or three candles in one window, one each representing Jesus, Mary and Joseph. (catholiceducation.org)
Kwanzaa: Candlelighting, central to the ceremony, reinforces the meaning of the principles. The placement of the mishumaa saba (candles) in the kinara is as follows: Black, for the color of African peoples everywhere, is located in the center. Three red candles, represents the blood of the ancestors, are placed to the left. Three green candles that symbolize the earth, life, and the ideas and promise of the future, are placed to the right. Beginning December 26 with the black mushumaa, a different candle is lit for each day, alternating from left to right. After the candlelighting, the principle of the day is discussed. I love seasonal scents. I’m not just talking about only holiday scents, there are 4 seasons after all. For example, in the spring, I love the smell of gardens and fresh flowers, in the fall I love scents like Caramel Apple, and Pumpkin Spice. You get the idea. This is a very big month for us!
This week we celebrate the one year anniversary of Castle View Candles!
In one year:
we have had 264 sales, both online and in person.
We have 1909 favorites on Etsy
We are scheduled for our first outdoor market in July.
On a personal note, the month of May also marks Mine and Nathan’s 5 year wedding anniversary! I am forever grateful for this man. He lets my dreams run wild and encourages me to make them reality. Without his support Castle View Candles would never have been. Thanks for putting up with the messy kitchen, and the cooling candles at 5 in the morning when you just need a cup of coffee.
And in honor of our anniversary, we are offering a 10% off coupon until the end of May! Enter Code nuptials2009 at checkout.
When buying soy candles keep these tips in mind:
- Large rooms will require larger candles, or multiple candles. A tea light will not scent a living room. However a larger candle may be too much for a bathroom, depending on your intensity preferences.
- White mottling or splotches are normal in soy candles, and may become more pronounced over time. This is normal and does not affect the scent or function of your candle.
- Keep colored candles out of direct sunlight. They will fade.
There are slight differences when burning soy candles compared to other non soy candles:
- Trim the wick to 1/4″ the first time and every time. This will maintain the burn time, and reduce soot from a too long wick.
- The first time you burn a soy candle make sure to keep it lit for as long as it takes to create a melt pool that reaches the entire outside edge of the container. This seems trivial and unnecessary. It is one of the most important rules of soy candles. If you only burn your candle for 10 minutes, the next time you light the candle, it will never reach the edges, causing a tunnel effect. This makes the wax melt at uneven rates and will cause your candle to extinguish itself prematurely, therefor ruining your candle.
- If your candle has tunneled and will not stay lit, you may use glass container candles with a candle warmer.
- Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended
In order to keep costs down, I have made the very hard decision to drastically cut back on my fragrance offering. I currently have around 100 fragrances, and I am only going to move forward with 30, 25 year round, and an additional 5 during the holidays. There are so many great scents out there, and I love so many of them, and want to bring them to you, unfortunately being able to offer any scent at any given time is just not cost effective. Starting today you will see on my Etsy page, that quite a few things are on clearance. These candles are still the same quality and style that you all love, they just wont be available for a very long time. These will remain on clearance until they are gone.
The good news is that most of your favorites are still going to be available. This also means that those “Limited Edition” scents will now be mainstays!
The scents that will be staying are:
Lemon Lime Basil
Pumpkin Caramel Latte
